The Sathya Sai Center of Torrance has about 35 members and
meets Friday evening at 8:00. Weekly donations of food are
brought for the homeless from a restaurant downtown to the
Yahweh distribution point on Saturday. On Sunday, Center member
contribute bags of sandwiches and fruit to be distributed to
homeless people in a nearby city.
On holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, Center members
bring food, clothing and gifts for needy families to their
homes. We are blessed by the opportunity to share and to
help.
Torrance Center has also been blessed this year to have had two
excellent speakers. Dr. Jagadeeshan came and spoke with us
about establishing projects to involve youth in helping others
in the community. Apurna came recently with many wonderful
slides of the summer Mahayagnam at Puttaparthi and stories of
her experiences in Swami's school and throughout her life as
she has been guided and blessed by Baba.
A project begun by one Center member has been adopted by many
membersin the Center. In India, Pravaham is the name of a
school for girls who come from some of the neediest families
and might otherwise face lives of working in the fields. The
director, Lucy Shyamsundar, guides them in classes designed to
create well-trained nurses assistants to work in geriatric
centers. Two years ago when Torrance center members joined this
project, 15 girls were the yearly "batch." Last year the number
was raised to 20, and next year Pravaham will admit 25
girls. Pravaham is helping people help themselves to help
others. Surely this is a blessed project.
The Torrance Center has participated this year at medical camps
in Corona and Oxnard. We joined the regional retreat at
Cottontail Ranch for a happy weekend with good speakers and
warm small-group sharings in the beautiful hills of
Malibu. Each Friday we are so glad to meet at the home of the
Indrakumarans to share bhajans and His Love.
